Second “scam” in two months. Why France is so outraged by AUKUS alliance

27.09.2021, Moscow.

The creation of the AUKUS military alliance between the US, the UK, and Australia is primarily aimed against China, but France believes it is the main victim, according to an editorial comment of September 24 of the Essence of Time newspaper.

China’s reaction to the creation of AUKUS was negative but moderate. The EU countries’ reaction, that of France first of all, was much harsher. According to the French ambassador to the US Pascal Confavre, they “were not even informed about this project,” and the French Foreign Ministry learned about it from media.

France’s harsh reaction is partially due to the fact that the policy of the US Joe Biden administration, as well as Australia and the UK, is a blatant insult against the allies.

However, European politicians have long become accustomed to insults from their “American partners.” In contrast, multi-billion financial losses after Australia rejected a military contract with France has turned out to be unbearable.

“It is clear that the newly established Anglo-Saxon alliance is strongly anti-Chinese. In fact, the US granted Australia a mandate to contain China in the region, and it meanwhile resolved its small economic issue. The point is that the nuclear submarines to be delivered to Australia were initially supposed to enter US service, but the US simply lacks money to complete their construction.

The said contract was signed in 2016, and then it was worth $90 billion. In response, Paris not only cancelled the celebration of the 240th anniversary of the Battle of the Chesapeake, when a French squadron fought against the UK together with newly established US, but for the first time in history it recalled its ambassadors from Washington and Canberra for consultations.

This is the second deal the US has ruined over the last three months. Previously, Switzerland rejected French Dassault Rafale aircraft for the US-made F-35 by Lockheed Martin.”
