Lavrov: Holding "summit of democracies" is a step towards splitting global community

26.09.2021, New York.

Washington’s initiative to hold a “summit of democracies” would be a step towards dividing the world community into friends or foes said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during the discussion at the 76th session of the UN General Assembly on September 25.

“The participants [of the “summit of democracies” – Rossa Primavera News Agency] will be determined by Washington itself, of course, claiming the right to determine the degree of compliance of a country with democratic standards. In essence, this initiative is quite in the spirit of the Cold War, proclaiming a new ideological ‘crusade’ against all dissenters,” Lavrov said.

Head of the Russian Foreign Ministry noted that this approach fundamentally contradicts the recent statement of US President Joe Biden, who said that Washington does not want to divide the world into opposing blocks. In fact, according to Lavrov, the “summit of democracies” will be a step towards splitting the world community into friends and foes.

The minister also stressed that in its relations with its partners Washington appeals to the priority of democracy only in order to interfere in internal affairs of the countries it is interested in, while the West is not interested in democracy in global international relations.

At the moment, a general debate of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly is taking place at the UN headquarters in New York. More than 100 leaders of the states and governments, as well as high-ranking representatives, are speaking remotely or in person expressing their opinions on urgent issues of confronting the most important challenges humanity has faced.
