Imposing US ideas about democracy on the Afghan people is a strategic mistake of the United States, special envoy of the Russian President for Afghanistan and director of the second department of the Russian Foreign Ministry Zamir Kabulov said, REGNUM news agency reported on August 3.
At an event organized by the Gorchakov Foundation for the Support of Public Diplomacy, the diplomat noted that the United States had used the territory to establish a network of military bases instead of rebuilding Afghanistan. According to him, Washington thus projected power on the entire region bordering Afghanistan, including Russia.
“The second mistake, which I think is strategic: the Americans instead of just helping Afghanistan to develop, to develop its state institutions, the economy, based on Afghan traditions, they promoted democratization and imposed their own ideas about democracy, and they failed,” Kabulov said.
The USA intends to withdraw its entire foreign contingent from the country by September 11, ending a 20-year history of stationing its troops in Afghanistan.
Against the background of the withdrawal of US troops, the militants began to actively occupy the territory of the country. They have already launched an offensive on major cities. Earlier, former CIA chief General David Petraeus said that such actions by the United States could end with a bloody civil war in Afghanistan.
