Kurginyan: The unity between the Russian and Ukrainian peoples is not obvious

Saying that the Russian and Ukrainian peoples are one is not necessarily an obvious truism, said political scientist, the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan on July 15 on the Topic program on the Donetsk Union TV channel.

Such scholars as Toynbee, Huntington, Spengler, and Danilevsky had an ongoing debate regarding the idea of civilizational lines and the notion of mono-civilizations, recalled the political scientist.

“Apparently, a certain civilizational rift truly does exist [in Ukraine], and now it has passed through Slavyansk, Kharkov, Novorossiysk, Odessa, and so on. There’s that line,” said the expert.

The Soviet Union was not an ordinary civilization with a uniting Orthodox or Hindu religion, as Huntington and Toynbee would imply, explained Kurginyan. The USSR was a meta-civilization, a meta-country, and because of this “we overcame the fate of having civilizational lines and divisions,” stressed the expert.

If the global transformation process turns into the conservative direction with a clash of civilizations, then the line will indeed be drawn somewhere near the Kiev region, said the leader of the Essence of Time movement. According to him, another spiritual awakening would be necessary for this to happen.

But nevertheless, if there is a line, then there is that constant struggle between two Ukraines, like between two brothers – Ostap and Andriy from the novel Taras Bulba, – there is a big, philosophical, religious and even metaphysical constant in the global arrangement,” explained the expert.

In this case, you can call Ukraine as much as you want to have a fair brotherhood between the Russian and Ukrainian peoples, but it’s impossible to escape the civilizational rift, stressed the political scientist.

“I do not insist that the civilizational right is there. I am simply convinced that the Soviet Union was organized more rationally, because it was not a civilization in common sense, and if everything goes back towards old civilizations, then the rift will be redrawn,” concluded Sergey Kurginyan.

On July 12, Vladimir Putin published an article On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians, where he elaborated in detail on the idea of the fraternity between the two Slavic people.
