The degradation of democratic institutes along with the regress in education have infiltrated all the sectors of the Western world, political scientist and the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan said on April 26 on the Evening with Vladimir Solovyov program on the Russia One channel.
Speaking about contemporary democracy, which “in its current form is the motto of non-development and degradation” for the periphery, Kurginyan explained that decision-making by a progressive majority has disappeared.
“No one is interested in any norms of classical democracy in the world today. Is democracy the power of the majority? Why then do they call people ‘vatniks’ [an offensive name for pro-Russian and patriotically oriented people used by Russian liberals and by nationalists outside of Russia ― translator’s note] etc.?” Kurginyan noted, indicating “a contemptuous attitude to the majority” that takes place increasingly often.
The political scientist comes to a conclusion that, if majority today has lost the reins of power and makes no difference, then the power goes to a minority. However, many questions should be asked to the contemporary minority as well.
“So, this is the power of a minority? What kind of a minority? An enlightened one? By what means and by what criterion is this education level estimated?” he wondered.
As an example of the transformation of the Western intelligentsia, which is taking on the functions of the elite, Kurginyan recalled an episode when he participated in a TV program with an American host.
“I start talking with him and quoting Walt Whitman, Edgar Alan Poe ‘The Raven.’ He is looking at me in astonishment, he does not know who they are!” the political scientist said.
“They have no idea who Faulkner is. The have no idea who Hemingway is, who Steinbeck is. They have no idea who Walt Whitman is. Still, they are enlightened people. But why is he an enlightened man? Can this be explained by any measure?” the leader of Essence of Time concluded.
