The Soviet Union disintegrated not due to the actions of Western intelligence agencies but because of the systematic work of the then political elite of the country, independent Russian analyst Igor Nikolaychuk said on the air of Sputnik Moldova on March 18.
“The disintegration of the Soviet Union was determined by the conscious action of the elites in power at the time, and this is the main reason for its collapse,” the expert said.
According to the analyst, it is ridiculous and groundless to talk that the Soviet Union disappeared because of the work of Western intelligence services. On the contrary, Western countries were afraid of the Union’s dissolution due to the unpredictable consequences.
Nikolaychuk also touched on the instruments used for the collapse of the country.
“The disintegration of the Soviet Union was accomplished impeccably and skilfully. And the only possible scenario related to inciting of nationalism was used,” said the analyst. The incitement of nationalistic feelings gave striking destructive results, even despite the fact that nationalism was not widespread in the republics of Central Asia, Russia, and Moldova.
30 years ago – on March 17, 1991, in the USSR the referendum on the further destiny of the Soviet Union was held. In spite of the fact that the majority of citizens voted for preservation of the country, tendencies for disintegration proceeded, and on December 26, 1991 the USSR ceased to exist.
