The USA can destroy itself by seizing Russia’s sovereign debt

05.03.2021, Moscow.

The most the USA can do against Russia is to impose sanctions on Russian assets in US securities. But the question is whether the USA will decide to do so, or whether it will consider that it could be “shooting yourself in the foot,” Vice-President of the Experimental Creative Center International Public Foundation Yury Byaly thinks.

Earlier, Bloomberg informed that the United States and Great Britain are discussing two options for new sanctions against Russia. According to the softer option, the sanctions would be imposed “Russian oligarchs,” who, according to the US authorities, are involved in corruption or human rights violations.

The more “extreme” option envisages imposing of sanctions against Russia’s sovereign debt. According to Bloomberg, US President Joe Biden might take this step only if Russia “is again found to commit a major transgression of the international ban on chemical weapons.”

The fact is that recent changes in the US policy, including sanctions, were very painful for the US seemingly closest allies (Germany and not only). This is causing a disastrous and massive distrust of both US dollar assets and transactions that could be further influenced by the US authorities.

If the US does take the risk of sanctioning the debt of any country in treasures, the whole world will realize that this bell tolls for anyone. And a massive withdrawal of both countries and corporations from US debt may begin. That is, the collapse of the already shaky US foreign debt pyramid.

The same is true for the Swift payment system: the best way to ruin it is to cut off one or two important countries. That is why it seems to me that the US will not be able to coordinate such sanctions with Europe. And the extremity of their sanctions will be ensured by increasing the circle of “sub-sanctioned” Russian corporations and individuals (and their foreign counterparties), which are critical for Russian development. And this, of course, may turn out to be very painful and difficult to overcome – as sanctions against Nord Stream-2 have already shown.

We have the only way out: first, to quickly and forcefully achieve self-sufficiency (sovereignty!) in everything that concerns critical areas of national development, and second, to thoughtfully seek such business partners in major projects that are not afraid and do not retreat under the threat of sanctions.
