The middle stratum of the Russian elite, which remains Western-oriented, irritates the anti-Western masses, philosopher, political scientist and the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan said on February 21 on the Evening with Vladimir Solovyov program on the Russia One channel.
“The inertia of the pro-Western existence is extremely strong today. It is strong not among the people, who have long taken anti-Western positions, and not in the top strata, which understand that they would not survive. It is strong in the middle strata of the elite, which still have strong roots in the West,” the political scientist explained.
According to Kurginyan, the inertia of the longtime pro-Western sentiments is expressed in idle hopes for changes in the West’s attitude towards Russia. Every more or less neutral word said in the West is interpreted by certain part of the elite as a signal of policy softening.
“Hope is the last to die. When will this hope for partnership with Europe be dead, when will they finally say that something, whatever it be, needs to be built in one country?” the expert wondered. “How long can the nation’s patience continue to be worn out in these idle attempts?”
Kurginyan reminded the long history of Russia’s striving to be part of the West. The late elite of the Soviet Union, followed by the Russian elite, lived with dangerous pro-Western illusions. “We are friends with Germany, we supply gas there, then we gradually enter the EU, merge our armies and our nuclear forces, the US leaves,..” the political scientist listed the dreams of the Westernists. He drew a parallel between this point of view and Leon Trotsky’s position after the October Revolution, “Why should be develop our productive forces? We will take the European productive forces soon, combine them with our raw materials, and everything will be fine.”
According to the philosopher, any hopes for the West were ended in the Stalin period, when the idea of building socialism in one country, which is “insane in terms of Marxism,” was proposed referring to Lenin’s article “On Cooperation.”
Kurginyan recalled the results of the policy of autonomous life of the USSR. “Tens of thousands of plants were built, a formidable industrial power appeared as well as a really new powerful army, and all the rest. This led to the victory in the war against fascism with its most powerful army in the history of mankind. It was really the most powerful army, and no Genghis Khan or whatever else could be compared with it.”
The adoption of the concept of autonomous existence of the USSR with its own ideology and economy capable of withstanding an economic blockade saved the country and the whole world from Nazism, the leader of Essence of Time stressed.
Are statements that “relations have been torn apart, and we have no European connections any longer” transforming into any specific decisions or readiness to implement in practice a new policy similar to building socialism in one country? This is the question the expert posed.
A significant part of the elite is already prepared in its heart to national autonomy, but a number of factors hinder final breakup with the West, Kurginyan noted.
“Neither Stalin nor Trotsky, nor many others, had their own personal economy, and their families did not live in Western countries, and this was not associated with any long-term and forced arguments that there is nothing else and that we need to unite with Europe under any conditions, by any means,” the political scientist stressed.
Every step towards the West is death; “the only thing we can do is turn to the other direction,” the philosopher concluded.
