Kurginyan explained why Russia cannot merge with Europe

08.02.2021, Donetsk.

The West’s unwillingness to unite with Russia, anti-Western moods in Russia and Putin’s policies impede Russia from joining with Europe, political scientist and the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan said on February 5 in an interview to the Union channel of Donetsk.

Kurginyan explained that the Russian project of entering into Europe has a long history. The USSR was destroyed for the sake of its implementation. The preparation of this process by Soviet elites goes back to 1970s. This project could not be realized, and now there are still several obstacles to this. The first one is the West’s absolute unwillingness to unite with Russia on an equal basis.

According to Kurginyan, the entire West aggressively refuses this. The US first and foremest, because it considers the union between Russia and Europe to be the main threat to its existence. He added that Europe has no a real sovereignty and cannot do anything without Washington.

The second obstacle is the growth of anti-Western moods in Russia. The West itself as well as the Russian population’s relation to it have changed significantly since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The expert explained that during perestroika — for example in 1989 — 80 % of people in the Moscow State University were pro-American, but now 85 % are against the US.

Russian President Putin’s actions, incompatible with Russia entering into Europe, became the third obstacle of the realization of this project.

“Once again there are now talks about a legal ban on equating Nazism and Communism. It is my old dream. I have always spoken about this, but now I hear this idea not from opposition, to which I belong, but from the country’s political leadership. Everything about  the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact has already been said. If it had been said under Gorbachev, the USSR would not have collapsed in a such way,” stressed the leader of the Essence of Time movement.
