Expert: USSR invented an effective form of peace in national republics

29.09.2020, Moscow.

In the Soviet period, the only effective form of civil peace in the national republics was invented, political scientist Boris Yakemenko wrote on September 28 on his Telegram channel.

“Another spiral of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan is indeed ‘another spiral,’ because the conflict will never end. In the Soviet period, the only effective form of civil peace in the national republics was invented,” Yakemenko wrote.

He listed the components of this form:

1) An “elder brother” who arbitrated and reconciled;

2) A supranational state ideology focused on the interests of the “Soviet man,” in which promoting the national component was perceived to be harmful for the unity of the Soviet people;

3) Financial and economic policy aimed at investing in the republics and supporting republican economies;

4) Support for culture and traditions resulting in high level of national consciousness and dignity, which prevented massacre as the only way to resolve conflicts.

“The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan largely results from the fact that none of these conditions can be met today,” Yakemenko wrote.

On September 27 in the morning the army of Azerbaijan began an intense shelling of towns and villages in Karabakh, including its capital city of Stepanakert.

After artillery preparation fire, the Azerbaijani army started an offensive along the entire perimeter of Nagorno-Karabakh. The Armenian territory towards the city of Vardenis was also under shelling.

Tens of victims, including civilians, have been reported at both sides. Hostilities continue along the entire contact line.
