Kurginyan: Morally deterring human genome editing is impossible

24.09.2020, Moscow.

Proposing only moral arguments in response to the challenge of the coming era of human genome transformation will not help, political scientist, philosopher, and the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan said in a new broadcast of his “The Meaning of the Game” cycle published on September 22 on the movement’s YouTube channel.

Kurginyan explained that the issue of transforming the human genome is no longer a matter of science fiction, and it is becoming part of political agenda. To illustrate this, he cited a relevant statement of the director Kurchatov Institute, Mikhail Kovalchuk that he made at the Council of Federation, and a statement by Russian leader Vladimir Putin that he made at a youth festival.

According to both speakers, the genetic transformation of humans, having become a reality, will result in attempts by the elite to artificially create a new subspecies of Homo sapiens, a “subservient human” with certain characteristics. Both the Russian president and the renowned scientist condemned this approach.

“The approach outlined in both Kovalchuk’s and Putin’s statements is in line with the understanding of right and wrong that my comrades and I hold,” Kurginyan stressed. He also explained that people of this stature making such statements makes the genetic engineering issues “part of the national security program as well as part of the higher global agenda, that entails discussions at the top level regarding the problem of destroying or saving humanity in the 21st century.”

However, Kurginyan pointed out that, although both speakers rightfully criticize the aforementioned global trends from a moral position, no one talks about exactly what lies beyond this moral concern.

“It is absolutely clear that trying to apply moral deterrence on these issues ― ‘subservient humanity,’ genome editing, splitting apart the species of Homo sapiens ― will never help. And that a fundamentalist response to this challenge, according to which everything should return to the good old days is meaningless. Even hoping that at least everything remain as it is without any further steps. This will not happen!” the political scientist believes.

He is confident that both the renowned scientist and the president understand that a technocratic race is underway, and as long as there is nothing super-strategic to drive us beyond this scope, the only thing we can do is participate in the race through accelerated digitalization, genome editing etc. But this means accepting the technocratic paradigm that is being imposed, the philosopher explains.

“And then we have to admit that beyond morality, there is nothing but the need to participate in this race. And as soon as we accept this paradigm, absolutizing the technocratic component in human development ― which has to be accepted, unless we have an absolutely different paradigm of accelerated development ― all we can do is reconcile and wait for the death of humanity,” Kurginyan concluded.

Further the broadcast discusses how the imposed model can be rejected, and what Russia can oppose it with.
