Russian Foreign Ministry condemns Latvia’s attempt to ban St. George Ribbon

11.06.2020, Moscow.

Speaking at a briefing with journalists on June 11, the Spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova condemned the Latvian senators’ attempt to ban the St. George Ribbon.

According to Zakharova, the politicians insult the memory of those who participated in the Great Patriotic War fighting the German occupants.

“We strongly condemn the Latvian radical politicians’ unlawful way of political point-scoring with Russia― in fact, with the historical memory of the entire generation,” the diplomat added.

She also urged to ignore various political versions of this symbol; instead, veterans should be asked what is behind its history.

On June 3, the Latvian Seim’s Commission for Human Rights and Public Affairs supported the banning of the St. George Ribbon during public events.
