The United States is working to scrap the legal foundation of international security, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a news briefing on May 28.
“Washington’s actions are becoming more and more dangerous and unpredictable,” Zakharova told reporters.
She listed the international arms control treaties from which the US has withdrawn from. These included the ABM Treaty, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action for the settlement of the Iranian nuclear program, The Treaty (between the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Short-Range Ballistic Missiles, and the Open Skies Treaty. In addition, due to the United States’ uncertain position, the extension of the Treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms are still in question.
“The nature of this behavior is clearly disruptive. This is a purposeful policy of the United, which aimed at the real undermining of the entire international legal basis on which international stability and security were built,” the foreign Ministry representative said.
Earlier, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov stated that the United States is likely to let the START III (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) expire. He said that the driving force behind the destruction on Arms Control Agreements is the Republican Party in the United States.
