Coronavirus showed the failure of the neoliberal version of capitalism, said the US philosopher and political scientist Noam Chomsky in an interview published on April 23 in the Cuban daily Granma.
Humanity should learn an important lesson from the situation with the coronavirus pandemic, said the political scientist.
“The first lesson is that we are facing another massive and colossal failure of the neoliberal version of capitalism. If we don’t learn that, next time something similar happens will be worse, ” said Chomsky.
According to the political scientist, the SARS epidemic in 2003 showed that there will be other pandemics and other varieties of coronavirus. Scientists should have been prepared and anticipated it, but this was not done.
“The pharmaceutical companies had resources, they are very rich, but they did nothing because the markets said that there was no use in preparing for a future disaster,” said the political scientist.
In the meantime, he noted that governments cannot do anything in the context of neoliberalism, “they are a problem, not a solution.”
