Russia calls for the lifting sanctions against developing countries

Russian Ambassador to the UN Vasily Nebenzya called for all sanctions against developing countries, imposed not by the UN, to be lifted, the Permanent Representative’s press service reports on April 9.

At the UN Security Council meeting on the topic of coronavirus held on April 9, Nebenzya said that developing countries are facing huge challenges in the context of the coronavirus pandemic, and they need assistance first and foremost. He noted that the UN is the best platform for coordinating such assistance.

The Permanent Representative called on all the countries, which had imposed any sanctions against developing countries bypassing the UN, to lift them. According to him, it is unacceptable to help someone with one hand and harm them with the other.

On March 11, the World Health Organization declared a coronavirus pandemic. According to the latest available data, the total number of confirmed coronavirus infection cases has exceeded 1.6 million. As a result of complications caused by the virus, more than 95.6 thousand people have died.
