Tehran refuses to negotiate with Washington under pressure

16.02.2020, Tehran.

The negotiations between Tehran and Washington are impossible under the pressure, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on February 16 during a press-conference broadcasted by the Iranian TV.

According to Rouhani, the USA should lift the sanctions and get back to the nuclear deal at first. Once that has been done, it will be possible to negotiate under “the 5+1 group”.

As long as it has not happened, there will be no chance for negotiations”, said Rouhani.

The Iranian President also stressed that Teheran is interested in maintaining stability in the region, this is why it had officially proposed “Hormuz Peace Initiative”.

In 2015, it was announced that Iran and Western countries reached a Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. Under this agreement it was supposed that the sanctions would be lifted in exchange for the limitation of the Iranian nuclear programme. However, in May 2018, the USA declared its unilateral withdrawal from the deal, while imposing harsh sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

“The 5+1 group” is a forum of six countries that combined their efforts in order to prevent the use of the Iranian nuclear programme for military purposes.
