Russian Deputy Foreign Minister: US refuses to understand Russian approach to Libya

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov expressed regret about the lack of full-fledged cooperation between Russia and the United States during a conversation with journalists in the capital of Austrian on January 17, RIA Novosti reports.The senior Russian diplomat noted that on a number of fundamental issues regarding the causes of the ongoing violence in Libya, as well as on actions to resolve the situation, “these positions between Moscow and Washington differ significantly.”

Ryabkov stated that his American colleagues refuse to interact constructively, or even to constructively perceive positions of Russia on this issue. According to the diplomat, the Russian side will continue working on getting their American colleagues to understand their position.

An international conference on the settlement of the civil war in Libya is planning to open on January 19. The expectd main participants in the negotiations will be the head of the so-called Libyan Government of National Accordm, Fayez Sarraj and Marshal of the Libyan national army (LNA) Khalifa Haftar. Representatives of Russia, the US, Turkey, Egypt, the EU and the UN will also take part in the talks.

Negotiations on a ceasefire in Libya were held earlier in Moscow. However, LNA Marshal Khalifa Hawtar refused to sign the ceasefire agreement, as the opposite side refused to meet the LNA’s demands regarding the location of troops and the country’s political future.
