Syrian constitutional committee begins work without US participation

Syrian constitutional committee will hold its first meeting with Russia, Turkey and Iran as mediators, said Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem on September 27, TASS reports.

Russian and Syrian foreign ministers had made a joint declaration in the margins of the 74th UN General Assembly session in New York regarding the Syrian constitutional committee formation.

The joint declaration noted that the first meeting of the committee will be held on October 30 in Geneva, and co-chaired by representatives from the Syrian government and the opposition.

Earlier, UN Secretary-General Antoni Guterres made a statement regarding the Syrian constitutional committee preparation work. In his statement, he noted the great role of Russia, Iran and Turkey in organizing such a committee.

It should be mentioned that Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Turkey and Iran had launched the preparation work in the fall of 2018 in order to put together such a committee.
