Iranian President accuses USA of “economic terrorism” in UN

26.09.2019, New York.

The Iranian leader Hassan Rouhani called US anti-Iran sanctions “economic terrorism” in his speech at the 74th session of the UN General Assembly on September 25, RIA Novosti reports.

In his speech, the president of Iran explained that his country is subject to “merciless economic terrorism” by the US authorities. The USA uses threats and pressure against other countries in their attempts “to deny Iran any advantage in the global economy.” According to Rouhani, the USA uses “international piracy,” including “misuse of the global banking system” in order to achieve its goals.

However, Rouhani stressed, Iran has maintained its right to independence and scientific and technological development in its confrontation with the USA.

In 2015, Iran and a group of countries (Russia, China, the USA, the UK, and France) signed a treaty called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, under which Iran refrains from developing nuclear weapons in exchange for the lifting of the West’s economic sanctions.

In May 2019, US President Donald Trump announced the withdrawal of the USA from the treaty, and he imposed additional economic sanctions on Iran.
