The first stage of the battle for the Libyan capital city of Tripoli by the Marshal Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA) was successful, said the 73rd infantry brigade commander, General Ali Saleh al-Qataani, RIA Novosti reported on July 11.

According to the high-ranking Libyan commander, the first stage of the operation to free Tripoli from the GNA forces [the Government of National Accord, Rossa Primavera News Agency], “terrorist groups … and ISIL (organization banned in Russia)” was completed successfully.

Al-Qataani said that the purpose of the first stage was to advance the troops and occupy strategically important districts, as well as deplete the enemy, gain control over key positions, and avoid human and material losses.

The Libyan commander said that the LNA is ready to start the second stage of the offensive on Tripoli to gain “final victory.” He called his opponents terrorist groups and hordes, who are fighting for personal interests to gain high positions and benefits.

Haftar’s offensive on Tripoli began on April 4th. LNA is supported by the authorities controlling the eastern regions of Libya. The western part of the country, including its capital city of Tripoli, is controlled by the Government of National Accord, headed by Fayez Sarraj.
