Ukrainian residents are ready to provide autonomy to Donbass

The majority of Ukrainians favor providing autonomy to the territories of Donetsk and Lugansk regions, the Interfax-Ukraine News Agency reports on June 25.

The Yaremenko Ukrainian Institute of Social Research and the Social Monitoring Center carried out a public opinion poll from June 13 to June 21. They surveyed 3,000 Ukrainian citizens. Of these, 49.5% spoke in favor of autonomy and 30.7% against.

Ukrainian politician Viktor Medvedchuk, seeking to peacefully resolve the conflict with Donetsk and Lugansk, proposed an amendment to the Constitution of Ukraine in November 2018 in order to provide autonomy to Donbass.

The leader of the Batkivshchina (Fatherland) party Yulia Timoshenko spoke strongly against the autonomy.

On April 18, during his election campaign, the current president of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, said that he was against providing any special status to Donbass.
