Russian Foreign Ministry responds to Georgian President on Russian tourists

Tourists from Russia visiting Georgia should feel welcome as dear guests, said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on her Facebook account on June 23.

In this way, she responded to the words of Georgian President Salome Zarubishvili, who earlier stated that Russian tourists “ought to keep on coming, because they love Georgia,” –despite the political situation in the country.

“If Russia tourists OUGHT TO do something it’s not just feel safe, but to feel welcome as dear guests, that they came to have a rest, rather than read internal political reports every day and avoid ‘large crowds of people in Tbilisi’, as the Georgian Ministry of Tourism recommended,” wrote Zakharova.

The Georgian Ministry of Tourism recommended to avoid large gatherings of people in the central part of the capital (near the parliament building, on Rustaveli Ave., Independence Square) due to the unrest.

As the Rossa Primavera News Agency reported earlier, the unrest in Georgia began due to the scandal provoked in the Georgian parliament during the 26th general session of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy. Georgian active opposition members considered it an insult that the Russian representative, State Duma Deputy Sergey Gavrilov opened the session, sitting in the Speaker of Parliament’s chair. Opposition speeches ended up with an attempt to capture the parliament and disperse the protesters by police.
