Iran: EU respects JCPOA only nominally

02.06.2019, Teheran.

The EU countries do not respect the conditions under the nuclear deal (JCPOA), Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on June 1 in an interview to Al Alam TV.

Zarif reminded that Europe is capable of respecting practically, not only nominally, the plan of action on the nuclear program as many European countries and banks are operating in Iran. He claimed that Iran could have taken a similar stance as the EU when it comes to following the deal’s conditions.

The Iranian Foreign Minister stressed that the EU countries have only a seeming commitment to the JCPOA conditions without respecting them in practice.

In July, 2015, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action was concluded. In May, 2018, the US unilaterally withdrew the JCPOA without explaining its reasons. Afterwards, Washington imposed sanctions against Tehran.

On May 15, the Iranian authorities declared their unwillingness to comply with several conditions under the deal, as it had been violated by the US.

The Iranian officials gave 60 days to the participants of the nuclear deal (Germany, France, the Great Kingdom, China and Russia) to settle the problems, which, according to Iran, impede it from respecting the agreement.
