The US State Department criticized the  Russian President’s decision to ease the procedure for granting Russian citizenship for the residents of the DPR and LPR who are now under the Ukrainian blockade, the official website informed on April 25.

State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said that by the decision of the Russian head of state to help residents of the peoples’ republics to realize their rights and freedoms, it is “intensifying its assault on Ukraine’s sovereignty and the territorial integrity of Ukraine.”

On April 14, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree easing the procedure for obtaining Russian citizenship by residents of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics. Vladimir Putin explained his decision by the need to protect the rights of Donbass residents, who have effectively been living in a blockade by Kiev for the past five years.
