Haftar's army starts second offensive on Libyan capital

The Libyan National Army (LNA) under the command of Marshal Khalifa Haftar has started the second phase of the battle for Tripoli, Al Wasat reported on April 22 according to LNA’s General Ahmed al-Mismari.

During the press conference, Ahmed al-Mismari said that the LNA forces “have consolidated defense on the territory and determined the main and secondary positions of the GNA forces [the Government of National Accord, Rossa Primavera News Agency] According to the general, the second stage of the battle for the Libyan capital will be carried out by infantry units.

On April 4,  the Commander of the Libyan National Army, Khalifa Haftar, ordered the beginning of an offensive ont Tripoli. The GNA forces under the command of Fayez al-Sarraj, supported by Western countries and the UN, oppose Haftar. The LNA’s supporters state that the GNA units consist mainly of al-Qaida militants ‌(organization banned in Russia) and the Muslim Brotherhood (organization banned in Russia).

On April 22, the Libyan Office of the World Health Organization reported at least 254 people killed as a result of military activity in the vicinity of Tripoli. Another 1,228 people have been injured.
