The Ukrainian elite, not the people, wants war with Russia, said the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan on November 25 at the Sunday Evening with Vladimir Solovyov TV program.
During the program, participants discussed the incursion by Ukrainian warships into Russian territorial waters. The Russian experts qualified it as a deliberate provocation by Ukrainian authorities, who aspire to provoke an armed clash between the two countries.
One of the Ukrainian guests disagreed with such an opinion and said that “Ukrainian society does not want war.” So, provoking a conflict with Russia will not lead to an increase in Poroshenko’s approval ratings on the eve of the upcoming presidential elections.
Sergey Kurginyan objected, reminding that the people who were alive at the beginning of the last century also had no desire for the world war; however, it happened. The events that took place today in the Black Sea, show that Ukraine needs a pre-war hysteria. But, it is the Ukrainian elite, not the people, who want it. Kurginyan said that the elite is exploiting its radical anti-Russian policy as a commodity that can be sold to the West at a bargain price. In order to make such a deal, the elite is ready to sacrifice the interests of its own people.
While substantiating his point of view, Sergey Kurginyan reminded of the Church schism that Pyotr Poroshenko provoked in 2018. The Ukrainian president demanded the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople to provide the Ukrainian Orthodox Church with independence and to distinguish it from the Russian Orthodox Church. These actions decreased Poroshenko’s approval ratings inside the country, but increased his popularity among Western politicians.
On November 25, 2018, two Ukrainian warships violated Russian territorial borders and headed for the Kerch Strait. The Russian Border Service ships rammed one of them in order to stop the violators.
