Today during the voting in municipal elections the President of Belorussia Alexander Lukashenko announced to the journalists the possibility to station 10,000 Belorussian servicemen along the contact line between the conflicting parties in Donbass, TASS reported on February 18.
The personnel of the Republic’s armed forces can be sent only if there is a peacekeeping mission coordinated with Russia and Ukraine. At the same time, Lukashenko declares his complete independence with regard to sending peacekeepers and his readiness to comply only with the will of the parties of the negotiations.
“If my country was entrusted with some role in the settlement of this conflict, I even said this to the presidents Poroshenko and Putin, because a lot depends on them: do not count on me to be someone’s. I would do exactly what the two presidents would agree on,” the president of the Republic said.
Belorussia also clearly understands that not everyone benefits from a peaceful conflict resolution. There are countries that, on the contrary, are ready to increase confrontation. “They will constantly inflate this conflict, so that it becomes hot in Russia and Belarussia. We have to make things right and stop this conflict. That‘s the key,” said Alexander Lukashenko.
In December 2017, Russian President Vladimir Putin told about the possibility of introducing a peacekeeping mission to Donbass. In his opinion, the case of introducing peacekeepers should be coordinated with the People’s Republics. Kiev, in its turn, delays the talks by imposing beforehand conditions unacceptable for the unrecognized Republics. It is also worth noting that the issue of the soonest settlement of the conflict in Donbass is also important for Belorussia. Since the beginning of the war, more than 150,000 refugees from Ukraine have arrived in Belorussia, which puts an additional burden on the country’s budget. In addition, a big problem is the flow of illegal weapons that are being transported to Belorussia from Ukraine.
