We must follow the example of Marx and create an intellectual center for understanding the post-capitalist modern times, in order to resist the current subversive tendencies. That was the call of Giulietto Chiesa, a former member of the European Parliament, the research fellow at the Kennan Institute of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, on November 5 at the open meeting of the Sofia Club, Rossa Primavera News Agency reports.
According to this scientist, today it is not possible to fight capitalism because capitalism no longer exists. We are dealing with a new phenomenon which no one has really named yet. We live in a period of transition: we are moving from capitalism to a new formation that is already defining our lives in many ways today.
Chiesa specifies that classical capitalism was driven by the goods production. Now the production of goods is nothing compared to the production of money. The production of artificial money, the amount of which is increasing exponentially. The world becomes a fiction, the money has lost its meaning. We are facing a deception, an endless deception.
Chiesa focuses on his thesis, “We live in a Matrix. Our whole life, mental and intellectual, is the Matrix.”
According to the scientist, we need to follow the example of Marx. To be able to fight we would need a new theory of modern society, which we don’t have. No one understands the system we are living in. But Marx was describing the system, which at that time had a 300-year history. We, on the other hand, must come to understand the system that is developing right now before our eyes. The main problem is that there is no intellectual elite anywhere that can study it.
Chiesa says that there are people in Europe who are trying to resist the situation. However, this resistance is not united “because there is no place where the theory of a new world can be shaped.”
He talks about the necessity to create a new global intellectual think tank, “We have to create a place where all civilizations will be able to think about the future of our planet. Who can create this truly innovative center? It can be done only jointly by a number of countries. Russia is the first country capable to participate in the process. African countries do not have this potential. China finds itself in a specific situation — it begins to lead the world without experience to do so. And Russia finds itself in a situation where it can unite all the other countries.“
“One of Lenin’s greatest achievements is the creation of an institutional weapon of resistance. A party is an organized weapon. An organization of intellectuals must be created. Those who have the knowledge and the spiritual powers to use them. This organizational weapon needs to be created,” the scientist says.
He adds that there is still hope. But only if the creation processes will go faster than the destruction ones.
On November 5, Moscow hosted the “Sofia” Club Open Meeting. The topic was “Left Alternatives for Europe”. The “Sofia” Club was established in 2013 in the capital city of Bulgaria on the initiative of Tatjana Ždanoka and Giulietto Chiesa, the deputies of the European Parliament, Sergei Kurginyan, the leader of the Essence of Time social movement, and Zakhari Zakhariev, President of the Slavic Foundation. Representatives from Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, Spain, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Russia, and Ukraine participate in the discussion.
