Member of Polish Sejm: Trimarium will strengthen member states’ positions in EU

09.10.2017, Lithuania.

The Trimarium format will allow suggesting ideas about the future of the European Union and proposals on the issues of security and sanctions against Russia, the Polish Sejm Defense Committee’s Chairman Michał Jach said as he arrived to Lithuania on a working visit, Vesti-Kaliningrad reports citing Baltic News Service (BNS).

Also, Michał Jach said that the Patriot missiles Poland plans to purchase from the US will also defend Lithuania.

By establishing a new political format embracing 12 countries on the Baltic, Black, and Adriatic seas, Warsaw wants to create an alternative US-oriented center of influence in the European Union as opposed to Germany and France.

Another purpose of the association is believed to be countering any connections, including those in the energy sector, between Russia and Western Europe.

The Trimarium format includes the states of the Visegrad Group (Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary), the Baltic States (Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia), and also Croatia, Austria, Slovenia, Bulgaria, and Romania. The informal leader of the association is Poland.

The Trimarium project is similar to Józef Piłsudski’s Intermarium project proposed after the WWI to establish a confederative state including Poland, Ukraine, Belorussia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Moldavia, Hungary, Romania, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, and probably Finland.

In July 2017, US President Donald Trump attended the Trimarium summit during his visit to Warsaw.

If the plans of establishing the new military and political union are implemented it will threaten the Kaliningrad region with isolation.
