Qatar Defense Ministry: We have no plans to invade Syria

23.08.2017, Russia.

Qatar is not going to send its troops to Syria, said Qatar’s Defense Minister Khalid bin Mohammad Al Attiyah on August 23 during the Army-2017 International Military Technical Forum, RIA Novosti reported.

“I can assure you that Qatar has no intentions of having ‘boots on the ground’ in Syria. At the same time, Qatar supports Russian, the United States’ and Turkey’s initiative to bring peace and safety to Syria. We will do our best in order to support our friends and allies in the desire to bring peace to this country”, – stated Qatar’s Defense Minister.

Before the crisis in relations between Qatar and Persian Gulf countries occurred, Qatar played a significant role in supporting the so-called ‘moderate’ opposition groups in Syria. Ever since Russia brought in to Syria a limited troops contingent at the request of Syrian government, and Turkey changed its position on the Syrian problem, Qatar had almost stopped supporting Bashar Asad’s enemies and started harmonization of relations with Iran and Turkey.
