Poland to station US air defense systems in the country

The US and Polish defense departments have signed an agreement on Warsaw to receive Patriot air defense systems, reported the RIA Novosti News Agency on July 6, according to Antoni Macherevich, Polish Defense Minister.

The document was signed during US President Donald Trump’s visit to Poland before the G20 Summit.

Mr. Trump came to Warsaw upon invitation from President Andrzej Duda, who was going to discuss the issue of boosting the American presence in Poland as well as a number of economic issues. In particular, the US President will visit the Three Seas Initiative summit, which unites Austria, Bulgaria, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, and Estonia. The Three Seas Initiative’s main goal is to create “an energy alternative” to the Russian gas projects in Europe.

Russian-Polish relations have worsened after the Polish Parliament decided to demolish Soviet monuments. Nikolay Kharitonov, the Duma member from the Russian Communist party called to cut off diplomatic relations with Warsaw.
