Donetsk state opera and ballet theater restored 80% of its pre-war repertoire, the director of the theater Valentina Kurkchi-Maksina told Donetsk News Agency on Saturday.
“The sets destroyed by shellings were constructed anew in our shops. Russian colleagues also helped us a lot, both with the sets and costumes. Many of our productions were being restored for a long time, piece by piece, we may say they were born anew,” she said.
According to the director, the productions restored include “La traviata”, “Rigoletto”, “The Barber of Seville”, “La boheme”, “Carmen”, “Nabucco” and others. “Aida” was performed on Saturday after a long time. Almost all of the set for it had to be restored, apart from one part of it – a large head statue.
“Unfortunately, ‘Turandot’ opera is currently not in the repertoire, but it will be restored by the next season. Things are more complicated with ‘Spartacus’ ballet and ‘The Flying Dutchman’ – the set for these productions burned down completely,” Kurkchi-Maksina noted.
The storage house of “Donbass Opera” caught fire as a result of shelling in summer 2014. The sets of a large number of productions were destroyed as a result, including expensive and complicated sets for “The Flying Dutchman” opera. In summer 2015 Moscow-based Bolshoi Theater gave “Donbass Opera” a part of its old sets.
