South Korea to begin consultations with China over North Korea problem

06.12.2017, China.

Information that South Korean President Moon Jae-in will visit China on December 13, was confirmed by Lu Kang, the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, a statement published on December 5 website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China reads.

It is reported that Moon Jae-in will arrive in Beijing at the invitation of the Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party Xi Jinping to conduct the talks on issues related to the situation around North Korea.

South Korea regularly conducts joint military exercises with the US on its territory. In mid-2016, the government of South Korea took a decision on the deployment of the US Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense missile system, THAAD. China and Russia opposed this.

North Korea’s nuclear tests were used as a pretext to deploy THAAD. The latest launch of the intercontinental ballistic missile Hwasong-15, which is capable of carrying a large nuclear warhead and can reach the territory of the United States, was held on November 29 this year, in response to the United States’ and South Korea’s joint military exercises.

Editorial comment

North Korea launches missiles and conducts nuclear tests in response to the military exercises by the United States and South Korea. South Korea deploys a US missile defense system in response to the nuclear tests in North Korea. In response, the North launches more nuclear tests, which are followed by the next round of military maneuvers on the South.

In principle, there is nothing special at a first glance. Confrontation between North and South Korea has been going on for a long time – since 1948. Before the fundamental solution to restore the integrity of Korea will be found, a conflict appears inevitable.

The question is whether the conflict will die out, or will escalate.

At present, we can see an escalation. Every subsequent military exercise conducted by Washington and Seoul involves more and more armaments. For example, air force maneuvers taking place currently involve more than 200 aircraft, including strategic bombers and fifth-generation jet fighters F-22 and F-35. At the same time, Pyongyang is testing more and more powerful nuclear warheads, and launching ballistic missiles which are flying farther and are capable to reach targets in the United States.

The only way to move from confrontation towards peace is to start holding talks. As long as politicians pay visits to each other and conduct consultations, chances to settle conflicts politically remain high.
