What is OpenAI counting on, if it does not intend to make a profit from AI?

The American company OpenAI, created to develop artificial intelligence (AI) technology, clearly does not expect to make a profit in the coming years. It plans to spend huge sums on AI infrastructure, meaning it must have another goal, Rossa Primavera News Agency IT Desk wrote.

Analysts at the investment bank HSBC have concluded that OpenAI will not be able to make a profit at least until 2030. Even if the audience of the company’s flagship product  — the ChatGPT chatbot — grows from today’s 10% to 44% of the world’s population by that time, revenue would reach $213 billion. However, the cost of cloud infrastructure and computing for the same period is estimated at nearly $792 billion.

Total infrastructure development costs for the company by 2033 are projected to reach $1.4 trillion. Meanwhile, OpenAI has yet to present a clear monetization plan beyond subscription fees from ChatGPT users. They can hardly expect that AI itself will invent a way to generate income large enough to exceed such enormous expenses.

Most likely, OpenAI is sacrificing profitability in exchange for strategic dominance. If the company becomes a monopolist in the digital world, it will set the rules of the game and shape its own global ecosystem. Profit will come, but not financial — geopolitical and technological.

At the same time, it is entirely possible that this is merely a grand pyramid scheme of expectations. OpenAI leaders have said they just believe in the success of their venture — a bad sign for investors. There are increasingly many reports of disappointment in AI technology, as its capabilities have turned out to be significantly lower than expected.

Be that as it may, when the “artificial intelligence bubble” bursts — just as the “internet bubble” burst in 2000 — the created infrastructure will remain. But modern IT giants grew out of the ruins of that earlier pyramid.

The collapse of expectations surrounding AI may also end up strengthening the positions of a limited group of companies.
