The decision on Ukraine’s accession to NATO will depend on the new US administration, and France does not oppose Kiev’s membership in the alliance, stated French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu on October 20, in an interview with Tribune Dimanche.
“Everything depends on the administration that will be in the White House. France is not opposed to this in principle,” the minister said. He also mentioned the need to seek ways to establish lasting peace.
At the same time, Lecornu noted that regardless of the outcome of the US elections, the US administration will primarily focus on the Asia-Pacific region and China.
If Republican candidate and former US President Donald Trump comes to power, the US will review its NATO funding. This will change the contribution distribution system, and Europe should prepare for the fact that US taxpayers will not pay for its security, predicted the minister.
