German military expert explains why Ukrainian armed units attack Kursk Region

09.08.2024, Berlin.

The Ukrainian armed units attacked the territory of Kursk Region to divert attention from its defeat in the Donetsk direction, retired Bundeswehr Lieutenant-General of the German Armed Forces and military expert Roland Kather said on 9 August on the German channel Welt.

“In fact, the situation on some parts of the front, in the area of Avdeevka and Chasov Yar, is more than critical for the Ukrainian armed units. I think they wanted to start a maneuver to distract attention,” he expressed his assumption about the reason for the Ukrainian armed units’ attack on the Kursk region.

Kather said that the pulling of Ukrainian troops to the Kursk direction could turn into a disaster for them in other parts of the front, as it gives the Russian Armed Forces a chance to advance in those directions. He called such actions on the part of the Ukrainian armed units an “unsafe game.”

On the morning of 6 August, the Ukrainian armed units invaded the territory of Kursk Region. After occupying several villages, they advanced towards the district centre of Sudzha.

The Russian Defence Ministry said that at the moment, the units of the Sever Group of Forces with the reserves that had arrived continue to destroy the Ukrainian armed units in Kursk Region. On the western outskirts of Sudzha, as well as in the villages of Daryino, Gogolevka, Melovoy and Nikolsky, the enemy’s manpower and equipment are being eliminated.
