Le Point: Ukraine tries to upset Russia’s plans in Africa

24.07.2024, Paris.

Ukraine seeks to undermine Moscow’s plans in Africa by stepping up diplomatic relations with countries on the continent, French magazine Le Point wrote on July 24.

“In recent months, Ukraine has been intensifying its diplomatic efforts on the African direction by opening new embassies,” the article claimed.

The article’s author notes that this is happening against the background of the fact that many African states have not spoken out against Russia after the start of the special military operation in Ukraine.

According to the Ukrainian ambassador to Senegal Yuriy Pivovarov, Kiev is disappointed with the unwillingness of some countries to condemn Russia’s actions at least in moral terms.

According to Le Point, Ukraine plans to strengthen its influence in Africa by opening 20 new embassies by the end of 2024, which is half the number of Russian diplomatic missions in the region.

Amid the ongoing hybrid conflict with Russia, Kiev is focused on lobbying its interests, the magazine said.

Russia has intensified its relations with African countries. Last year, a Russia-Africa summit was held in St. Petersburg, bringing together delegations from 48 countries.
