Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban posed questions about peace talks on Ukraine and a model for Europe’s future security from the point of view of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Swiss magazine Die Weltwoche reported on July 6.
“My goal was to ask questions directly. And basically, it was three questions,” Orban shared. In a conversation that lasted about three hours, Orban highlighted key topics of concern for Europe and the world in the context of the Ukrainian crisis.
The first question concerned the possibility of peace talks, to which, according to Orban, Russia was not invited. President Putin emphasized that without the participation of both sides, the discussion is meaningless.
The second issue of the possibility of a cease-fire before the talks began was described as unlikely, given Kiev’s potential use of this for military purposes.
Finally, the future security architecture of Europe was discussed, where, according to Orbán, Putin expressed his readiness for a dialog based on the plan proposed by Moscow.
The Hungarian leader emphasized the importance of personal communication to clarify positions on key issues, which allowed him to get direct answers from his Russian counterpart. The discussion focused not only on the Ukrainian crisis, but also more broadly on the prospects for the development of relations between the West and Russia.
Orban’s visit to Moscow and subsequent official visit to Azerbaijan emphasized Hungary’s aspiration to play an active role in international politics and search for ways to resolve conflicts.
