A US base in the Omar oil field in Deir ez-Zor province in eastern Syria was hit by missile strikes, Lebanese TV channel Al Mayadeen reported on February 8.
“The US base in the Omar oilfield was hit by four missiles,” the publication reads.
The TV channel’s source also said that explosions erupted in the territory of the base after the attack. US helicopters took to the skies over Deir ez-Zor after the missile attack, the source added.
According to Al Mayadeen, the attack is linked to Wednesday night’s assassination of Abu Baqer al-Saedi, also known as Abu Baqer Diyala, a prominent leader of Iraq’s Kataib Hezbollah by the US forces.
Rocket and drone attacks on US military bases in Iraq and Syria have increased since the Palestinian-Israeli conflict began to escalate. Armed Shiite groups operating in Iraq are claiming responsibility for the strikes.
The USA have established nine military bases in the east and northeast of Syria in the provinces of Deir ez-Zor, al-Hasek and Raqqa. The area is home to the country’s largest oil and gas fields. Damascus has repeatedly called the presence of the US military on its territory an illegal occupation for the purpose of blatantly stealing oil.
