Die Weltwoche editor-in-chief: Authoritarian Ukraine is not our ally

13.01.2024, Bern.

Ukraine, whose president does not prevent the banning of parties, imprisonment of journalists and abuse of the church, is an autocracy, Die Weltwoche editor-in-chief Roger Köppel said in his video blog on January 13

Köppel added that he was upset by the reaction of the media, as well as his Swiss compatriots, who are ignoring the death of independent journalist Gonzalo Lira in a Ukrainian prison.

According to Köppel, this case once again shows how autocratic Ukraine is. The country is now a society ruled by a president who “does not avoid banning parties, imprisoning journalists and abusing the church.”

Köppel promised to do everything he could to bring the truth to the Swiss people and politicians in Bern. Köppel also expressed hope that they would ask themselves “whether Ukraine is the right ally for the confederation”.

“People here just don’t want to know about it. It’s also systematically ignored by the media, and here I was talking to Tucker Carlson yesterday, corresponding… now apparently Gonzalo Lira’s father, Gonzalo Lira – Sr. has confirmed to him that his son Gonzalo Lira died in a Ukrainian prison,” Köppel continued, sharing his impression of the situation.

“And this is simply a scandal against the backdrop of the uncritical, more or less uncritical, almost uncritical support that this [Ukrainian] government is allowed to enjoy as a ‘sacred outpost of freedom, democracy and our Western values,’ coupled with all the financial benefits,” the editor-in-chief noted.
