The newest multi-purpose frigate Admiral Golovko will allow the deployment of Project 955 Borey nuclear submarines, military historian Dmitry Boltenkov told the Izvestia newspaper on December 26.
Boltenkov specified that the Admiral Golovko, being a multi-purpose frigate carrying long-range missile armament on board, is capable of attacking with supersonic Onyx missiles, high-precision Kalibr missiles, and, in the future, hypersonic Zirkon missiles.
“It will also be able to shoot back at the northern regions of Finland from the Barents Sea,” the expert noted.
He also added that the frigate can reinforce groups of surface ships. This capability may become especially relevant after the reconstruction of the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov and the repair of the nuclear-powered missile cruiser Admiral Nakhimov are completed.
In March this year, Severnaya Verf reported that the frigate Admiral Golovko may be handed over to the Russian Navy in the second quarter of 2023.
