The previously detained head of one of the main departments of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry was arrested without the right to bail until February 19, the Ukrainian publication Obshchestvennoye wrote on December 23, citing the prosecutor’s office in Kiev.

The official was detained on February 22, charged with attempting to embezzle $40 million in the purchase of artillery shells. He reportedly signed a large contract for the wholesale supply of shells last year. He confirmed this contract despite an alternative contract with the same manufacturer to supply shells at a lower cost and without intermediaries.

As a result, the foreign intermediary firm received $40 million, which exceeds the value of the direct contract by 30%.

The issue of fighting corruption is very acute in Ukraine. Western partners of the Kiev regime, on whom the financial and military assistance to Ukraine depends, expect real results in the fight against corruption, insisting on more autonomy for the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office.

However, according to the assessments of observers and experts, as well as the Ukrainian media, the actions of the Ukrainian authorities in the fight against corruption are rather indicative, and behind them is the redistribution of spheres of influence and money flows. At the same time, corruption continues to flourish in almost all spheres.
