The German government should veto negotiations with Ukraine over its possible EU membership, German MP Sahra Wagenknecht said, the DPA news agency informed on December 13.
According to her, Ukraine’s membership in the EU would result in the loss of billions of euros. “Will the government then want to agree on a special budget provision every year to finance Ukraine’s bottomless barrel?” Wagenknecht inquired.
She emphasized that the German authorities promise to double direct funding for Ukraine and also expressed willingness to negotiate Ukraine’s extremely expensive EU accession while “the USA is refusing aid to Ukraine because it has become too expensive for them.”
Wagenknecht said Ukraine should remain outside NATO and maintain its neutral status.
Since February 2022, Germany allocated more than €25 billion in aid to Ukraine, and in 2024, it decided to allocate another €8 billioninstead of the previously planned €4 billion.
The Institute of German Economics in Cologne calculated that after Ukraine becomes a member of the European Union, it will “eat up” almost 17% of the total budget, i.e. about €130-190 billion.
