German MP: German Defense Ministry does not warn parliament about billions of dollars of aid to Ukrainian armed units

01.12.2023, Berlin.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius’s announcement of a new 1.3 billion euro military aid package to Ukraine came as a complete surprise to the Bundestag, a deputy from the opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Ingo Gädechens said, Tagesspiegel reported on November 30.

According to the politician, the established practice requires that the parliament as a budget legislator be informed in advance about the new financial obligations of the state.

It is even more important when such large sums are involved, the MP noted. “1.3 billion euros is not a minor thing,” he emphasized.

The Bundestag simply cannot allocate sufficient funding for this, no matter what the defense minister says about it, Gädechens noted.

At the same time, the source in the German Defense Ministry said that this aid package is “a part of the long-term strategy of support for Ukraine,” which the agency regularly informs the country’s parliament about in one form or another.
