Spiegel: Heads of European Commission and European Council quarrel over Ukraine

06.10.2023, Brussels.

The head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the head of the European Council Charles Michel had bickering in absentia over Ukraine, Spiegel wrote on October 6.

“In an interview with Spiegel, Charles Michel criticized the foreign policy initiatives of Ursula von der Leyen. The European Commission reacted angrily and irritated by the statements about Ukraine’s imminent accession,” the publication wrote.

Earlier, Michel accused the EC chairwoman of exceeding her authority. At the same time, journalists noted that the head of the European Council himself exceeded his authority by announcing Ukraine’s accession to the EU by 2030.

The publication notes that there has already been a conflict between von der Leyen and Michel, which is explained by the struggle for power. The confrontation is most clearly manifested in foreign policy issues.

On October 4, Michel said that Ukraine will be able to join the commonwealth until 2030, provided that all the requirements of Brussels are met. According to him, the Kiev regime needs to fight corruption and carry out reforms. Michel also recalled the countries of the Western Balkans, which have been waiting to join the EU for 20 years.
