Kurginyan explains what was behind Andropov’s phrase that we did not know our society

20.07.2023, Aleksandrovskoye.

It is a crime to steer social processes without knowing them, the leader of the Essence of Time movement, philosopher and political scientist Sergey Kurginyan said on July 11 in his original broadcast Destiny.

The political scientist noted that an especially urgent intention to establish an analytical center for the investigation into the role of closed structures in politics came to him after a phrase by General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party (CPSU CC) of the Soviet Union Yuri Andropov, who had long been the director of the almighty KGB of the USSR.

In the end of his life, when he was a sick man and when he came to power in the Party, Yuri Andropov publicly said, ‘We do not know the society we live in,’” Kurginyan said.

He pointed out that this statement very much inspired both the intelligentsia, which possessed certain humanitarian knowledge, and those who confronted this intelligentsia.

The political scientist added that this statement received many enthusiastic responses, in particular about how honestly and straightforwardly Andropov spoke etc.

Perhaps my opinion will seem surprising or too radical to someone, but I can say frankly that a General Secretary of the CPSU CC, who was director of the USSR KGB and who publicly said that we did not know the society we lived in should have need arrested, expelled from the Party, and executed, because the Party was our helmsman, so it means that our helmsman did not know the sea where he was navigating our ship! Kurginyan believes.

A party is a political structure, and politics is the management of social processes, or the social energy, the analyst explained.

One cannot steer social processes without knowing them. They need to be detected, understood, led, and directed. If the General Secretary of the CPSU CC and former chief of the KGB, who is responsible for knowing our society, says he does not know it having spent tremendous money and having suppressed all the population under the current central authority, it either means that he is saying something really ambiguous or, as Belinsky wrote in his letter to Gogol, ‘I will not dare to continue,’ he is insane. And was it only him who was insane? Kurginyan concluded.
