Russia is ready to replace the supply of Ukrainian grain to the poor countries after the withdrawal from the grain deal free of charge, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitriy Peskov told reporters on 18 July.
“Russia maintains its position here,” Peskov said.
“To our common regret, we are talking about rather small quantities, for the poorest countries in Africa received the least from the grain deal,” he explained.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin at a meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said that the obstacles to exporting Russian goods have not been removed. At the same time, the grain deal was initially created as a mechanism to help poor countries, including those in Africa.
In 2023 such low-income countries as Afghanistan, Yemen, Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan received only 822 thousand tons of food out of 33 million tons. Thus, they accounted for only 2.5% of supplies.
