Islamic fundamentalism is the primary threat to Uzbekistan

21.08.2021, Tashkent.

The fundamentalist Islamic model of state is the primary threat to Uzbekistan national security, said Director of Center of Research Initiatives Ma’no (Uzbekistan) Bakhtier Ergashev, the site pravda.ru reports on August 20.

96 % of Uzbekistan population are Sunni Muslims. During the post-Soviet era, Uzbekistan has been witnessing a strong expansion of religious movements engendering numerous extremist groups.

Ergashev points out that with foreign support some groups tried to change the country’s secular way of development. This threat has not gone away and still presents the primary danger for the country’s national security.

Today the extremists’ rise to power in neighboring Afghanistan will give new impetus to the Islamism in Uzbekistan. Ergashev believes that the Taliban’s (organization banned in Russia) victory in Afghanistan will send a message to all clandestine and semi-clandestine extremist groups in Uzbekistan.
