Bundestag member: US military bases in Europe are occupation

09.05.2019, Berlin.

The presence of US bases in Europe is a “covert occupation”, a member of the Bundestag committee for international affairs Waldemar Herdt said on May 8 in an interview to Izvestiya.

The Bundestag member from the Alternative for Germany (German: Alternative für Deutschland) party said that “US military bases are not alliance, but occupation.” To support his opinion, he pointed out the absolute extraterritoriality of such bases, which are closed for not only regular German citizens, but also for law enforcement officials. Even the nation’s leaders are unaware of what is happening at these bases.

He also revealed plans to raise the issue of legitimacy of the presence of US military bases in Europe after the European Parliamentary elections. At these elections, Alternative für Deutschland and its allies are expected to reach serious results at the polls (at least sufficient to block the European Parliament’s decisions).

Herdt also said in the interview that the USA plans to establish a military base in Latvia according to a scenario “that was written long ago,” which is now simply being implemented.

US (and British) military bases appeared in Germany in 1945 after Nazism was defeated. They were indeed occupational, helping to keep Germany in the US zone of influence. After the Cold War began, the occupants were called “defenders against the communist threat” and allies.

The threat has been nonexistent for almost 30 years; the Soviet/Russian army has left not only the GDR, but also Eastern Europe and the former Soviet republics, but the “defenders” still continue to “defend” Germany. However, the Germans wonder against whom.
