The European Union can impose sanctions against Venezuela, the Chairman of the National Assembly (Spanish: Asamblea Nacional) of Venezuela, Julio Borges, announced through his Facebook page on May 31.
In his statement, Julio Borges thanked Antonio Tajani, the Vice-President of the European Commission, for addressing the issue of European sanctions against certain officials in the Venezuelan government.
“The European Parliament is going to consider the option of introducing personal and individual sanctions against officials involved in repressions or the infringement of democratic rights, such as judges,” Borges said.
Julio Borges added that he is ready to submit similar requests to the UN, the OAS (Organization of American States), and Vatican, if necessary.
In early April, active street protests began in Venezuela, which escalated into clashes with the police. The protests were triggered by a decision of the Supreme Court to limit the power of the opposition-dominated Parliament. According to official reports, the street protests left 55 people dead. On May 31, the spokeswoman of the Foreign Ministry of Russia, Maria Zakharova, said that Venezuela could face a “mass war”, and that the only way to escape it would be “an internationally mediated dialogue between the Venezuelan government and the opposition”.
